5A- Identifying Local Opportunities

Title: Sea turtle nesting season has arrived. Now get out of the turtles’ way.

Story Description: Sea Turtle Trackers, a group of volunteers aiming to help save the sea turtle population in Tampa Bay, have been working from the crack of dawn to preserve the baby turtle’s nests from human and nature.
Problem: The sea turtle population’s drastic decrease has many concerned about the survival of the species and the life of the ecosystem with little funding and manpower to accomplish the preservation.
Who Has the Problem: The problem truly lies with the ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico, but the people who have the problem are concerned environmentalists trying their hardest to keep the species from extinction.

Title: Woman recovering after alligator attack in Florida pond

Story Description: A woman was attacked by an 8-ft alligator in Melbourne, Florida while wading in a local pond. She had to be evacuated by a helicopter to a local hospital to treat her wounds which were determined to be not life-threatening.
Problem: Wildlife is increasingly aggressive at certain points throughout the year as the seasons change and are becoming nuisances in neighborhoods and parks with families and small children.
Who Has the Problem: Local populations with small bodies of water in the area.

Title: Deputies: Elderly woman airlifted after being attacked by three dogs in Brooksville

Story Description: An elderly woman was attacked by pit bulls after they were left unattended by the owner. The woman was given first aid by a witness, then firefighters before being flown to a hospital where she was declared to be in a stable condition. The owner was charged and the dogs were put down with the owner’s consent.
Problem: Animals are allowed to be untrained and unattended by the owner, resulting in the attack on an elderly person, a criminal charge on the owners, and the deaths of three dogs.
Who Has the Problem: Innocent bystanders who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is a problem that will persist unless regulatory laws are passed, or products/services are introduced that can regulate the behavior and roaming of household pets.

Title: Heat doesn’t fry fans’ enthusiasm at Tampa’s Sunset Music Festival

Story Description: Customers at a large music festival were subjected to immense Florida heat for several hours over two days of walking around, so the festival employees were instructed to spray water using hoses and mist machines in an attempt to cool down the people. The paramedics on site received 91 medical calls, compared to just 30 from last year.
Problem: People who can only be so prepared in an environment with restrictions on liquid containers and limited access to hydration are susceptible to the immense natural factors in open venues at events that last hours. This can be solved with cooling stations and tents that are easily accessible for large capacity events.
Who Has the Problem: Attendees that paid a lot of money to see their favorite artists perform have to face the challenge of nature in addition to the crowds and travel.

Title: Hillsborough leaders need more time to decide on regional ferry service

Story Description: City officials are still in limbo for deciding on the funding of several ferries that runs back and forth from Tampa Bay to St. Petersburg, all day, every day, even for special sporting and musical events in the areas.
Problem: The stalemate that the city officials face and the drawing out of the project will make it even more difficult to organize and finish on time. This is an issue with the decisiveness of elected officials and the inefficiency of bureaucracy at a local level.
Who Has the Problem: Taxpayers in the area that would like to see the results of their voting in elected officials and the promised (and paid for) ferry service.

  1. Hey!
I enjoyed reading about your different local opportunities, despite the unfortunate events occurring to some of these people. Your summary and problem descriptions were very simple and straightforward, which made it easy to understand each problem. I think it's pretty interesting that the dogs in one of your stories was put down after killing that woman. That issue brings a lot of debate on having pitbulls as pets. Good job!

  2. Hey Jacob, nice post. I liked how your articles were all different in context but still interesting overall. The article that discussed the woman getting attacked by an alligator was extremely frightening to me. That's literally my worst nightmare as I'm petrified of alligators and crocodiles. Also I can relate to the article about the immense heat temperatures in Tampa. I'm from Miami and can tell you this weather is no joke as it's so hot the whole day.
